The Knoxville Police Department is investigating an overnight fatal crash that happened on I-40 East at the Western Avenue underpass.

At around 1:55 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2024, KPD officers responded to the aforementioned location, where a black Chevy Tahoe had crashed into the bridge. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on investigation conducted at the scene, including witness statements, the Tahoe was traveling east on I-40 when it suddenly swerved to the right for unknown reasons and struck the bridge.

The crash remains under active investigation by KPD crash reconstruction personnel.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
